Planning a Camping, Hiking & Backpacking Trip

When it comes to planning a trip, most of us work with two speeds. If it is us, ourselves, going for it; we don’t mind experimenting. Couple of extra clothes, a cap, sleeping tent, toiletries and jacket, and we are done. But if it is for someone else, you always prefer to give them a list because that’s the only way to be sure that everything is covered.

Tips for camping, hiking and a backpacking trips:
  • Hygiene: Whenever on any travel, whether it’s camping or flying first class, hygiene and cleanliness are a must. While scouting places for your stay on a backpacking trip, look out for generic cleanliness. The place should be clean, should have access to clean water and should have the provision of preparing the food with hygiene. On a personal level, you can carry hand sanitizer, cotton balls and face towel to make sure that you are covered.
  • Carry a Medical Kit: While some of you maybe frequent campers and have tough bodies that have learnt to adjust according to your camping or hiking trip, you should still be prepared for the contingencies. An emergency box with small knives, bandages, flashlight, anti allergic tablets et cetera is always helpful.
  • Arrive before the sun sets: Reaching a new place after nightfall can be quite daunting even for seasoned backpackers. Arriving at a place when there is still light gives you time and confidence of exploring the surroundings. You can then easily unpack, set your foot and go about enjoying your holiday.
  • Experiment with your itinerary: Going to a camp means to be at a place that has been built to experience the wilderness of nature. While some camps have a strict schedule and do not offer freedom to do more, but at Offroad Camps you are more than welcome to make changes in your itinerary. Being at a place which is quite and away from the crowd, we have many eco trails and hiking routes nearby for you to explore. Some ways are easy for even kids to climb and experience the beauty of this place. And then there are trekking and biking trails suitable only for practiced trekkers and bikers.
  • Keep the camping site clean: Preserving nature is probably our foremost responsibility towards this beautiful world that we live in. When leaving the place after your camping, hiking or the backpacking trip, make sure that you did not leave any trace behind. Well of course, photographs exception.
  • Sunscreen: Camping means a lot of walking in the sun. So irrespective of what time of an year are you visiting a place, never forget to pack a good sunscreen of spf 50.
  • Right kind of clothes: Spending time outside means exposure to the weather. 10 degrees of temperature in open is always different than same degrees when you are at home, surrounded by walls and coziness. Always check what range of temperature would you be staying in and carry your clothes accordingly. As a thumb of the rule, when going for a camping trip to mountains, always pack warmer clothes than you will need. It will keep you comfortable.
  • Food: Fortunately, there are a lot of packed options available nowadays that give you the freedom to cook easy. A frying pan, few disposable plates, spoons, tea, coffee, mugs and a boiling pan can help you sail through. For extensive camping trips, prepare the whole list including the match boxes well in advance to ensure that you don’t run into any trouble while you stomach is empty.

How To Plan a Rishikesh Trip to Remember

When in February 1968 The Beatles travelled to Rishikesh, the destiny of the small town by the Ganga changed forever. Their interest in transcendental meditation became a significant point changing the attitude of westerners about travelling in India. It was the raw beauty of nature that attracted them most to this much publicised Rishikesh trip. Since then, a lot has changed here. Yoga, meditation, rafting , cliff jumping , flying fox and adventure camping are some of the things / activities that have become synonym to weekend in Rishikesh.

Rishikesh surrounded by Hills on three sides and is a gateway to the Char Dham Yatra of Uttarakhand. The whole city is considered to be sacred. Yogi, gurus and meditationers dwell in the bylanes that boast of being a part of the land that encourages free thinking. It is here, at Rishikesh, that spiritual knowledge seekers finally free at peace. Fondly known as the world capital of yoga, Rishikesh has more yoga studios than the combined strength of entire northern India.

How to reach Rishikesh: If you are planning Rishikesh trip, there are three ways to get in. You can either drive-in directly to the city via Haridwar or Dehradun. The drive from New Delhi to Rishikesh takes about six hours. You can read more about how to reach Rishikesh here.

River rafting in Rishikesh: Rishikesh probably offers the best white water rafting options in India. And the best part is that you get to do it on the mother of rivers – The Ganges. Although most tourists like to go for white water rafting during the summer months of March to June, but the real fun is going out there in winters. It is the time when water is cold and therefore more fresh. Rishikesh water rafting is marked by frequent rapids that range from level 1 to 5. The bigger the level, the more is the difficulty in crossing it. At the end of most rafting adventures, you get a chance to jump from a ledge into water and test your swimming skills.

Adventure camping in Rishikesh: Over the last few years, town has seen a great influx of youngsters visiting it over the weekend from Delhi, Chandigarh and other neighbouring cities. This has given rise to popularity of nature camping which is a great recreational activity without any time limit. Any individual keen on exploring quiet, peaceful places can try camping as it allows time out with nature. Adventure camping surged in Rishikesh about 10 years back when it was still a novel concept in India. However, lot of these camps were built around the beaches of Ganga and were banned by the NGT. Now, only a very few adventure camps run in Rishikesh but they are done so with proper rule following.

Rishikesh is also a place to try rappelling, Rock climbing , cliff jumping, kayaking and trekking. Our camp is about 28 kms from the city center and offers stunning views of the valleys nearby. One of the best times to visit us is during the monsoon when everything is lush green. We get visitors from places as far as Bangalore and Mumbai, and most of them like make the most after time here. We keep on posting the latest from our camp on our social media profiles. So if you want to see how is the weather today or what is new at the camp, please visit Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.
