Planning a Camping, Hiking & Backpacking Trip

When it comes to planning a trip, most of us work with two speeds. If it is us, ourselves, going for it; we don’t mind experimenting. Couple of extra clothes, a cap, sleeping tent, toiletries and jacket, and we are done. But if it is for someone else, you always prefer to give them a list because that’s the only way to be sure that everything is covered.

Tips for camping, hiking and a backpacking trips:
  • Hygiene: Whenever on any travel, whether it’s camping or flying first class, hygiene and cleanliness are a must. While scouting places for your stay on a backpacking trip, look out for generic cleanliness. The place should be clean, should have access to clean water and should have the provision of preparing the food with hygiene. On a personal level, you can carry hand sanitizer, cotton balls and face towel to make sure that you are covered.
  • Carry a Medical Kit: While some of you maybe frequent campers and have tough bodies that have learnt to adjust according to your camping or hiking trip, you should still be prepared for the contingencies. An emergency box with small knives, bandages, flashlight, anti allergic tablets et cetera is always helpful.
  • Arrive before the sun sets: Reaching a new place after nightfall can be quite daunting even for seasoned backpackers. Arriving at a place when there is still light gives you time and confidence of exploring the surroundings. You can then easily unpack, set your foot and go about enjoying your holiday.
  • Experiment with your itinerary: Going to a camp means to be at a place that has been built to experience the wilderness of nature. While some camps have a strict schedule and do not offer freedom to do more, but at Offroad Camps you are more than welcome to make changes in your itinerary. Being at a place which is quite and away from the crowd, we have many eco trails and hiking routes nearby for you to explore. Some ways are easy for even kids to climb and experience the beauty of this place. And then there are trekking and biking trails suitable only for practiced trekkers and bikers.
  • Keep the camping site clean: Preserving nature is probably our foremost responsibility towards this beautiful world that we live in. When leaving the place after your camping, hiking or the backpacking trip, make sure that you did not leave any trace behind. Well of course, photographs exception.
  • Sunscreen: Camping means a lot of walking in the sun. So irrespective of what time of an year are you visiting a place, never forget to pack a good sunscreen of spf 50.
  • Right kind of clothes: Spending time outside means exposure to the weather. 10 degrees of temperature in open is always different than same degrees when you are at home, surrounded by walls and coziness. Always check what range of temperature would you be staying in and carry your clothes accordingly. As a thumb of the rule, when going for a camping trip to mountains, always pack warmer clothes than you will need. It will keep you comfortable.
  • Food: Fortunately, there are a lot of packed options available nowadays that give you the freedom to cook easy. A frying pan, few disposable plates, spoons, tea, coffee, mugs and a boiling pan can help you sail through. For extensive camping trips, prepare the whole list including the match boxes well in advance to ensure that you don’t run into any trouble while you stomach is empty.
What are your tips for camping, hiking and a backpacking trip? Do you have any questions? Nothing is dumb or not worth asking. You may go through our Camping Essentials list or share your concern in the comments below and we will answer to the best of our abilities.

How To Plan a Rishikesh Trip to Remember

When in February 1968 The Beatles travelled to Rishikesh, the destiny of the small town by the Ganga changed forever. Their interest in transcendental meditation became a significant point changing the attitude of westerners about travelling in India. It was the raw beauty of nature that attracted them most to this much publicised Rishikesh trip. Since then, a lot has changed here. Yoga, meditation, rafting , cliff jumping , flying fox and adventure camping are some of the things / activities that have become synonym to weekend in Rishikesh.

Rishikesh surrounded by Hills on three sides and is a gateway to the Char Dham Yatra of Uttarakhand. The whole city is considered to be sacred. Yogi, gurus and meditationers dwell in the bylanes that boast of being a part of the land that encourages free thinking. It is here, at Rishikesh, that spiritual knowledge seekers finally free at peace. Fondly known as the world capital of yoga, Rishikesh has more yoga studios than the combined strength of entire northern India.

How to reach Rishikesh: If you are planning Rishikesh trip, there are three ways to get in. You can either drive-in directly to the city via Haridwar or Dehradun. The drive from New Delhi to Rishikesh takes about six hours. You can read more about how to reach Rishikesh here.

River rafting in Rishikesh: Rishikesh probably offers the best white water rafting options in India. And the best part is that you get to do it on the mother of rivers – The Ganges. Although most tourists like to go for white water rafting during the summer months of March to June, but the real fun is going out there in winters. It is the time when water is cold and therefore more fresh. Rishikesh water rafting is marked by frequent rapids that range from level 1 to 5. The bigger the level, the more is the difficulty in crossing it. At the end of most rafting adventures, you get a chance to jump from a ledge into water and test your swimming skills.

Adventure camping in Rishikesh: Over the last few years, town has seen a great influx of youngsters visiting it over the weekend from Delhi, Chandigarh and other neighbouring cities. This has given rise to popularity of nature camping which is a great recreational activity without any time limit. Any individual keen on exploring quiet, peaceful places can try camping as it allows time out with nature. Adventure camping surged in Rishikesh about 10 years back when it was still a novel concept in India. However, lot of these camps were built around the beaches of Ganga and were banned by the NGT. Now, only a very few adventure camps run in Rishikesh but they are done so with proper rule following.

Rishikesh is also a place to try rappelling, Rock climbing , cliff jumping, kayaking and trekking. Our camp is about 28 kms from the city center and offers stunning views of the valleys nearby. One of the best times to visit us is during the monsoon when everything is lush green. We get visitors from places as far as Bangalore and Mumbai, and most of them like make the most after time here. We keep on posting the latest from our camp on our social media profiles. So if you want to see how is the weather today or what is new at the camp, please visit Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. Uttrakhand Monsoon

The first time we saw this beautiful scene of monsoon in #Kasmoli, we knew this place will get us hooked. There was greenery around & every inch of mountains was covered in brightness. The freshness made us feel that our lungs expanded more and the pure mountain water brought some shine to our dull, lustless hair. Years later, that effect of our first experience is still on. Every time we pack our bags & head to this God given place, we feel the excitement.

Camping in Rishikesh

Camping in Rishikesh

Camping in Rishikesh

Camping isn’t always fun. It can be difficult to set your own camps & pray that the weather doesn’t get bad. But I like to be reminded that some good things come from being able to suck it up and push through, no matter what. I think modern life and the internet give us the ability to avoid being bored or doing tasks that are slow and challenging. That’s why the need to be on your own, away from the flashy and fast things is important.

There’s something honest about being with the woods. The man made environment of plastic, cement, stress and worry doesn’t have its harrowing effect here. Though we have evolved over centuries and have left living out in open, but camping in Rishikesh is unparalleled fun. I feel good in my body and good about the world when I am camping.

Perspective of mountains

Mountains allow a lot of time to forget. On camping, I don’t worry about the food or where the water will come from. Nature provides for all. Being in open reminds me what much of the world still looks like and what most of it looked like just 100 years ago.  It connects me with the elements: rocks, dirt, trees, leaves, bushes, shrubs, air – and I feel so free.

Reminds me that I can also do hard work

Sometimes, after just going out on camping in Rishikesh to a new location, I wonder why I started.  A loud voice says “, yeah, this walking up hill thing…sucks.”  But when I get to the top of a hill and set up the camp, it’s usually worth it.  I feel I accomplished something.  The internet addict in me needs this reminder.

Makes my mind relaxed

Moving through hills helps to reduce the frequency of thoughts and relaxes my mind. It reduces the normal chatter my mind creates. I focus only on steps, location, the nearby scenery and the birds around. Their voices soothe me on the trail. It’s just me and forest. The rhythm and focus are rejuvenating.

Enables me to connect with others in a better way

Conversations in offices, parties or social media are often unsatisfying for me.  There’s a lot of superficiality, wasteful and annoying norms involved.  People rarely show/tell you who they actually are, how they’re actually doing, or what they’re really thinking.  It’s mostly scripts and facades. Camping breaks this monotony and takes my mind to a level that allows me to speak to everyone humbly. Conversations with fellow climbers on the trails while camping in Rishikesh are interesting. People are relaxed, genuine and are not in the need to impress. These trails make you a better listener also.

Camping in Uttaranchal

Uttaranchal isn’t called the heaven just like that. It’s serene mountains and untouched trails offer experiences of a lifetime. There are the places that haven’t been discovered, or the ones which are known – very less people ever visit them. Not because these places are touch to reach, but because not many individuals have courage and enthusiasm to venture out of their comfort zone.

Nature camping is becoming a trend. There are corporates that we know of, who encourage their employees to go out, travel, trek and see the roughness of village life. Such initiatives not only help to bridge the gaps between rural and urban population, but also teaches the latter about the emotion of ’empathy’. Imagine being on a mountain with few strangers and nothing around, but beautiful trees, fresh air and stunning mountains. Imagine how easy it would be for you to experience that peace, those tranquil vibrations and let go of the hurt of the past. We are very tiny, sometimes negligible part of this vast universe. May be it’s time we get rid of our false egos and embrace the life for what it is – simple – and learn to be happy in the moment? And if in case you need a chance to bring out that emotion in you, we are here.

You can trek or drive through, right to the parking. We aren’t big, nor do we boast of anything out-of-ordinary, but we do promise you this – once you discover Kasmoli, you will want to come here again, because it’s beautiful, quiet and friendly campsite.

6 Reasons To Encourage Your Child To Go On Summer Trekking

Children Trekking Offroad Camps Kasmoli Rishikesh

Children Trekking

Saurabh had always been a quiet child. For as long as his mother could remember, he preferred indoors – reading books, playing on smartphone, watching TV and sleeping on holidays defined his style. He did like to step outside once a while and went for occasional rounds on cycle with friends – and that’s it – that was how his life was defined during holidays. When his mother called us with the request to expose her child to the world of trekking and take him to the mountains see life there, we just knew what it would take for him to come out of his shell and explore nature. So two trekking trips and lots of camping later, Saurabh became a different person altogether. His curiosity to know about things grew, and he started taking interest in sports and other recreational activities. So what is it that makes a child undergo a huge change in their outlook when the trek? We give you 10 reasons that we could think of. Feel free to add your own:

  1. Trekking is not just walking; it’s an experience of being close to nature. It is a treat to your senses.
  2. Trekking allows your child to develop his or her sense of inquisitiveness and explore what they have only read in books. Imagine being standing on a mountain of Himalayan range dentist read about it in your book or look at the photograph somewhere. Or imagine discovering migratory birds right at the place where they make their nests and give birth to their offspring.
  3. Trekking is not just an activity; it’s a full body workout. Your child gets to feel the strength of his or her own body and become responsible for own wellbeing.
  4. Sleeping in a tent or walking along new faces, your child gets time to bond and learn the art of communication. Without the interruptions of phone, television; it is sometimes a very dear chance to tell and hear more from each other.
  5. On trekking, children get to know more about not just their surroundings, but also about building fire, meal preparation, cooking, and most importantly learn how to get by without screens.
  6. Fresh air and open sky give time to the children be amazed with stars above and the tranquility of serene atmosphere and clean air around them.
